our story

At West House & Co, we believe in creating opportunity through doing whether it’s making, growing, sharing or supporting.

We are a collective of social enterprises founded by West House, Cumbria’s leading care provider for people with learning disabilities. For over 30 years, West House has been building spaces where people feel valued, supported, and able to live life on their terms. That same mission runs through everything we do, from gardens to glazes, kitchens to cafés.

West House & Co brings together our enterprises under one umbrella, united by a shared purpose and a deep connection to our community.

west house pottery

Our not-for-profit ceramics studio is a place of quiet craft and creativity.

At West House Pottery, individuals are supported to learn traditional pottery techniques, from throwing and glazing to kiln firing and finishing, while building confidence and independence. Every mug, bowl and jug is shaped with care, designed to be used and loved every day. It’s not just about what we make, but who makes it, and the pride it brings.

grow west

Set on a 12-acre site in Allerby, Grow West is our working garden and horticultural training space.

Our trainees gain accredited skills, hands-on experience, and real responsibility through planting, harvesting, and preparing seasonal produce. From veg boxes to flower beds, preserves to potted herbs, everything we grow is rooted in learning and care. The garden is more than a growing space, it’s a place where people grow too.

Café West

Warm, welcoming and full of flavour, our cafés in Keswick, Whitehaven and Workington serve up home-cooked food and daily opportunity.

Each café offers meaningful work experience for adults with learning disabilities, from food prep to customer service. Our menus celebrate simple, comforting dishes made with local ingredients (often from Grow West), and feature bakes and favourites our teams are proud to serve. These aren’t just cafés, they’re inclusive community hubs with heart.

hall garden

Hall Garden, in Workington’s Hall Park, is the place where it all comes together – open to the whole community to meet, play, eat, learn and create together.

Open to the public and other education and community groups it is hoped that it will foster connections in the local community and encourage people to take advantage of the local green spaces. Hall Garden is a community hub and space for leisure, events, workshops, a café and a shop selling produce created by the people that West House supports through their social enterprises including Grow West, Cafe West, and West House Pottery.

Across each space and product line, West House & Co reflects what’s possible when people are given time, support, and purpose.

We don’t just aim to be ethical, we aim to be empowering. Our products are proudly handmade and homegrown, with every sale helping us reinvest in care, training, and brighter futures.
