July is when the garden really begins to sing. At Grow West and Hall Garden, the beds are full of colour, the harvest baskets are getting heavier, and our growers are busy watering, picking, potting and planning for the weeks ahead.
It’s a month of long days, fresh flavours and plenty of hands-on jobs in the garden.
What’s flourishing in our gardens?
- Courgettes: Fast-growing and wonderfully versatile. Roast them, grate them into fritters or add them to summer traybakes.
- Salad leaves: Crisp, fresh and perfect for quick lunches. Keep picking regularly to encourage new growth.
- Tomatoes: Starting to ripen in the warmth. Delicious with basil, olive oil and a sprinkle of salt.
- Cucumbers: Cool, refreshing and ideal for salads, sandwiches or homemade pickles.
- Herbs: Mint, parsley, chives, rosemary and thyme are all full of fragrance at this time of year.
- Soft fruits: Strawberries, raspberries and currants bring a little sweetness to summer puddings, jams and bakes.
July to-do list for your garden:
- Water: Early morning or evening is best, especially for pots, young plants and greenhouse crops.
- Feed: Tomatoes, cucumbers and courgettes will benefit from a regular liquid feed.
- Sow: Keep sowing salad leaves, spring onions, beetroot and carrots for later harvests.
- Support: Tie in tomatoes, beans and climbing plants as they grow.
- Pick: Harvest little and often. Regular picking keeps many crops producing for longer.
- Deadhead: Remove faded flowers to encourage more blooms and keep beds looking bright.
- Watch: Keep an eye out for pests, dry soil and plants that need extra care in the heat.
